Recently, the chief public health physician of the country strongly supported the initiative of the Moscow authorities to ban smoking in doorways. Gennady Onishchenko took the initiative to ban smoking outdoors in public places, such as public transport stations.
“The scope of restrictions on smoking in public places should be expanded, but after careful consideration, with the appropriate motivation on the part of society. If a person is on a street in the company of other people and he is smoking cigarettes, then he should understand that harms those who are nearby, making them passive smokers “, – told Gennady Onishchenko, the chief public health physician of the country and head of Russian Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Human Health Control Service, to the Interfax.
As an example, Onishchenko cited a number of Western and South-East Asia countries, where it is forbidden to smoke in public places. The chief public health physician of the country is sure that a smoker does not only harm the health of others, but also insults them by his behavior.
“If he has gone away, you can give him a chance to smoke” – the head of Rospotrebnadzor mentioned.
Onishchenko ranked stadiums among the places where the smoking is restricted.
Previously, the capital deputies suggested a ban on smoking in doorways. Answering the question of what to do for smokers, the head of Rospotrebnadzor said that they should give up smoking.
“A smoker at a bus station harms and insults those who stand side by side”, said Gennady Onishchenko. “The obvious thing is that it is necessary to ban smoking in stadiums. There a smoker is in a confined space, and people, who are near him at that time, are suffering”, added Onishenko.
In this case, Onishchenko said that whole smoking prohibition in the streets is impossible. Those who want to smoke should move aside, away from people.
The ban on smoking in public places was introduced in Europe, the USA, several countries in South-East Asia. In Russia, tobacco users still live freely.
Russia has banned smoking in restaurants and bars, but this ban is just formal. Gennady Onishenko is frustrated that these institutions set aside special rooms for smoking. The owners are afraid of losing visitors.
“On the contrary, according to normal logistics smoking ban would attract customers”, shrugged Onishchenko.
Gennady Onishenko said as well about electronic cigarettes. He does not trust this know-how.
“It’s a controversial thing that does not bring obvious results, but is sufficiently promoted business”, he said.
