A new report released by the WHO says that multiple smoking bans, increasing tobacco taxes and health warnings on cigarette packs have not been enough to keep Europeans from smoking cigarettes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2011 almost 28% of adult Europeans smoked in comparison with around 20% in the U.S.
Between 2005 and 2011 in the UK smoking rates dropped dramatically while in Albania, Czech Republic, France the smoking rates raised. The WHO reports that smoking among females is increasing in an alarming rate. In European countries of Lithuania, Czech Republic, France smoking among women increased by 3% while in Austria.by 7%.
This trend is quite surprising because Europe has been world leader in regulating smoking. A number of countries have introduced graphic health warnings on cigarette packs and imposed heavy taxes on tobacco products as according to the WHO these are most effective ways to discourage people from smoking.
In 25 European countries, 75% of the cost of a pack of cigarettes comes from taxes. Besides this, 17% of countries have passed public smoking bans.
Why are Europeans still smoking? Here the marketing makes its job. Though many countries have banned tobacco ads on radio, media and internet, however few of them banned billboard ads. Only 3 countries in Europe have banned all forms of direct and indirect ads.
Therefore, the tobacco companies may use particular tactics to attract new tobacco users. In order to attract women, tobacco companies in the Europe are relying on female-friendly packaging with traditional female colors and cigarette variations like slim and super-slim cigarettes. Even pink cigarettes are created.
WHO estimated that in Russia there are around 100 cigarette brands marketed especially for women and promoted with images of fashion and glamor.
